Individuals with special needs and cognitive impairments often face unique challenges within the healthcare system, particularly in the context of cancer treatment and the period following treatment. While medical advances continue to improve survival rates, a lack of tailored services for medical and follow-up care, rehabilitation, and support in daily life remains a persistent challenge.
The „SeiTeil“ project is focused on examining the experiences and needs of individuals with both support needs and cognitive impairments living with and after cancer. This initiative is a joint research project of the German Cancer Society and the Federal Association of Lebenshilfe e. V. Therefore, interviews are being conducted throughout Germany. The aim of this study is to identify barriers within the healthcare system and develop specific recommendations for more inclusive treatment and follow-up care. Employing a participatory approach, this study actively engages a co-researcher with support needs and cognitive impairments in the research process. The long-term objective is to improve the quality of life for individuals with support needs and cognitive impairments. Furthermore, this study intends to propose specific recommendations to improve the effectiveness of current services.
